Why Lakeland flues end up needing a liner

Most relining calls here start with water, not fire. Open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners in pre-1960 Lakeland and Bartow homes were often built without a cap. Rain falls straight down the flue. The mortar joints between tiles wash out first. Cracked crowns from lightning and thermal shock let water into the space around the tile. Some of these older stacks were never lined at all.

Vented and ventless gas log sets retrofitted into those old fireboxes add a second problem. Gas burns wet. A wide masonry flue stays cool, so vapor condenses on the tile instead of leaving. That condensate is mildly acidic and works on the mortar from the inside. Efflorescence and spalling on the exterior brick is often the visible end of it.

Sizing drives the install. We measure the tightest point in the flue, not the fireplace opening. Offsets and tile lips eat clearance, and an ovalized stainless liner often fits where a round one will not.

Factory-built prefab fireboxes with Class A chase-top chimneys are different. Those are listed systems. They take their own manufacturer's parts, not a relining kit.

Nests come out before anything else. Chimney swifts are federally protected, and an active nest waits.
