What chimney cap replacement actually involves

The job starts on the roof, not in the truck. We measure the clay tile at its outside dimensions and note how far it stands above the crown. Multiple flues get counted and measured separately. The old cap comes off next. Mortared-in caps have to be chiseled loose without cracking the tile. Band-clamp caps come off with a nut driver. The new cap slips over the tile and clamps on four sides. Nothing is mortared, so it lifts off later for sweeping.

Prefab chimneys are a different animal. In 1980s-2000s subdivision homes, the lid is a sheet-metal chase cover over a framed and sided chase. Galvanized covers pond water and rust from the top down. Streaking on the chase siding usually shows up before the leak does. Replacements are fabricated off-site in stainless, cut to the chase, with a cross-break so water runs off, a drip edge past the siding, and a collar sized to the pipe.

Order matters. A cracked crown gets repaired before anything bolts to it. Chimney swifts are federally protected, so an active nest delays capping until the birds have fledged. Nest debris and squirrel caches come out first.

From the ground, binoculars tell you a lot. Look for rust streaks and a missing lid.
